Townsville Rifle Club Archive

On 18 April 1885, the Queensland Times, Ipswich Herald and General Advertiser reported that a “meeting was held, tonight, to form a rifle club under the Defence Act and forty-three men signed the roll. Mr. Edward Bevan was elected president.” The same newspaper reported on 7 January 1986 that “amongst the prizes competed for at a recent shooting match under the auspices of the Townsville Rifle Club were a case of beer, a bar of ‘Separation’ soap (whatever that is), bottles of ‘Timla’ and whiskey, silver-mounted pipes, white flannel suits, &c.”

Club activities included championships, ladies' and children's shoots, interclub competitions, picnics and Donors' Dinners. In early days the club arranged health insurance for members. At the Annual General Meeting on 5 November 1976, it was resolved that due to the small attendance and uncertainty of the future of the Club, there would be no election for office-bearers and that all club championships be left in abeyance.
