Trant Family Archive
The Trant family held a prominent position in County Kerry, Ireland, especially around Dingle and Ventry, from early in the 13th century. Branches of the family are now domiciled in America and Australia as well as Ireland.
Townsville is linked to this family through Sarah and Elizabeth Anne Trant, daughters of Thomas Trant and Maryanne Chute, of Dingle, Co. Kerry. Sarah, the elder daughter, married Richard Sheridan Brinsley and came to Queensland with him and her two daughters in 1860. Elizabeth Anne, orphaned in 1851, was reared by her uncle Francis Bernard Chute and his wife Jane Rowan. She later joined her sister in Queensland where she married Michael Hanrahan of Redbank. Eventually Sarah and Richard Brinsley settled in Townsville. It was whilst visiting Sarah there that Elizabeth died on 2 September 1904.
