North Queensland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Archive
The NQSPCA was established in 1896 (as Registered Charity Number 385) by Mrs J M Doyle and Mr H Horn The organisation's original aim was to assist in the prevention of cruelty to all living things, including animals and children. After the formation of the Department of Children's Services, the society focused solely on animal welfare with members taking care of stray or abandoned animals at their own homes until the owners could be located or a new home found.
The society first opened its Townsville Animal Refuge in 1968 on the northern outskirts at the Bohle on land leased from the Townsville City Council. The Animal Refuge was closed during 1972-74 due to damage sustained during Cyclone Althea in late 1971, and lack of funds. After reopening in 1974, the society enjoyed sustained expansion and financial stability, largely attributable to several generous legacies and donations and dedicated NQSPCA committees.
