Arthur Dexter Murgatroyd was born in Charters Towers in 1896. He worked with the Post-Master General’s Department in both Charters Towers and Townsville until the outbreak of World War One when, like so many Charters Towers men, he joined the First AIF and subsequently saw active service in France. After the war ended he spent time in Melbourne before returning to Townsville during the Depression years. Throughout these years he worked on the main roads and it was during this period he became Secretary of the Federated Clerks’ Union, a post he held until the 1970’s.
Murgatroyd was deeply involved in political affairs with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He was local campaign director for local, state, and Federal elections, the first secretary of the Hermit Park branch of the ALP, and an alderman of the Townsville City Council. He was also one of four leading members of the ALP Hermit Park branch, all aldermen, who were “expelled” from the party by the Queensland Central Executive (QCE) in January 1942. Their expulsion was because of alleged disloyalty to the party.
