Millaroo Research Station Archive

The up-river settlements of Clare, Dalbeg and Millaroo were established along the northern bank of the Burdekin River after World War II as soldier settlements but, with tobacco as the main crop, the area did not prosper.

In 1952 the Millaroo Research Station was established by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock in conjunction with the Burdekin River Authority and with assistance from the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission. It was intended that the Station would provide facilities for fundamental research to benefit the region and primary industries in North Queensland in general. Millaroo Research Station was not officially opened until September 1962 by which time comprehensive field investigations were underway along with laboratory work on soils and plant chemistry.
