Marsland and Marsland Archive

This large collection consists of the legal records of the firm Marsland and Marsland, solicitors of Charters Towers, which began practising in the second half of the nineteenth century. The documents date from the 1860s and cover the area of Charters Towers and surrounding pastoral properties, with some papers from Hughenden, Winton, the Gulf townships, Townsville, Ingham, Innisfail, and Bowen. This collection of original documents includes correspondence with legal firms in the United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, Sydney and Brisbane.

The papers cover the following topics:

 

Land - Deeds of grant, freeholdings, leaseholdings, etc.

Companies - Articles of association, deeds of incorporation, etc.

Personal Papers - Wills, probates, agreements, deeds of separation, deeds of adoption, pre- and post-nuptial settlements, birth, marriage and death certificates, deeds of gift

Business Papers - Often associated with pastoral companies, deeds of covenant, release and indemnity, powers of attorney, agistment agreements, partnerships and apprenticeship agreements, mining agreements and leases, hiring agreements, bills of sale, notices of seizure

Leases - Business premises, lands, etc.

Copies of correspondence

Miscellaneous bank book records for the firm's clients, mostly associated with matters of probate and property
