Library Association of Australia's North Queensland Regional Group Archive

This collection consists of the meetings, publications and correspondence of the North Queensland Regional Group, Library Association of Australia (LAA) from 1974 to 2002. The proposal to establish a Townsville-based branch of the LAA was proposed at a meeting convened by Chris Hunt - then University Librarian for James Cook University - in November 1974. Both the Queensland Branch and the General Council were very supportive of the Townsville proposal, and the first General Meeting of the LAA's North Queensland Regional Group was held on 25 November 1975. The efforts that went into the Regional Group's activities, such as displays for the Careers Markets to attract new members into the profession, are documented in the minutes and correspondence. Issues dealt with included public library services in the region, the role of regional groups as service providers and professional training and development. The group ceased to function in December 2002 when at the Annual General Meeting in June 2002 there had been no nominations for the executive positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. The incumbents continued in a caretaker roler until the end of that year.
