Townsville Gas and Coke Company Archive
On 25 July 1881, a group of Townsville citizens met and completed the formation of the Townsville Gas and Coke Company Limited. The initial capital of the company was £10,000 raised through the issue of ordinary shares of £1 value. The gas, produced from coal, was first reticulated on 24 February 1883. By 1939 more than 4,500 customers in Townsville were using reticulated gas.
This collection consists of correspondence to and from the company between 1904 and 1916 and reports on the flood waters from the Ross River between 1887 and 1910.
