North Queensland Ballet and Dance Company Archive

The idea of establishing a regional ballet company, prompted by the wastage of talent in Queensland's north especially in ballet, was first put forward by Ann Roberts. The first meeting was convened on 5 June 1969. Consequently the North Queensland Ballet and Dance Society was formed on 15 July 1969 with the passing of a constitution and election of officers. The premiere performance of the North Queensland Ballet Company took place on 9 April 1970, in the Theatre Royal, Townsville. The premiere performance included Les Sylphides, Graduation Ball and Pas de Quatre. From 1971 until 1980, several professional guest artists gave performances through the courtesy of the Australian Ballet, at each annual session.

By 1979, the major aims of the society had been achieved and the success of the company as an amateur institution was widely acclaimed.Subsequently the Board felt that it was time to move forward to the next stage – that of a professional company. This took several years to set in motion. By 13 October 1982, The North Queensland Ballet Company entered the next phase of its existence as a ‘Pro-am’ organisation. The last performance as an amateur company occurred on 30 October 1982. Funds were promised from various government bodies and eventually some corporate sponsorship was obtained. By mid-January 1983 a company had been formed. This company provided several seasons of dancing and was artistically successful, although there were many administrative and organisation difficulties.

An the end of 1984, a new fully professional company was created with Cheryl Stock as Artistic Director for 1985. The management team consisted of three people. The Townsville Arts Centre became the company headquarters, and six dancers were employed for a twenty-six week period. The company became Dance North, which to this day is one of only a handful of regional dance companies in Australia and is managed by a Board of Directors. From 1984 to 1994, the company went from strength to strength and it developed a touring programme that covered all of Australia. Very successful tours have been made to South-East Asia. A youth arm of the professional company was established in 1987 under the direction of Jane Pirani (daughter of one of the original founders, Ann Roberts). Extensions is 50 people strong and it has developed a national profile, performing all over Queensland and at the International Youth Festival in Adelaide in 1991 and Edinburgh in 1994.

In 1993 the North Queensland Ballet and Dance Company began donating its collection of programmes, flyers, newsletters and distinctive, eye-catching posters from the 1970s onward to the James Cook University Special Collections Archives. Dance North has since 2002 toured for regional, national and international audiences including London's Barbican Theatre in 2007. In 2009, Dance North launched its "embrace the extraordinary" program with the aim of making dance more accessible and relevant to all levels of the community while promoting the company's image across Australia.
