Anzac Day Archive

The following commemorative documents concern the commemoration of Anzac Day in Townsville.

The name Anzac is based on the initials of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and dates back to World War One when the corps was stationed in Cairo. Originally shorted to A & N.Z.A.C. for clerical convenience, it became Anzac when a code name was needed for the corps. It came into definite use in January 1915, a few days after the landing on Gallipoli, when the name was given to the cove where the landing took place.

During World War One, Australian and New Zealand troops became known as Anzacs, but the name generally means one who served at Gallipoli. The name has been perpetuated by the setting aside of 25 April each year, both in Australia and New Zealand, as a Day of Remembrance. By legislation the name is protected (Defence Regulations Act, 1921) and neither it, nor any word resembling it, may be used as a title, or commercially, except by permission of the Governor General.
