Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union Archive

This collection consists of the working files of the past organiser of the local AMWU branch, Fred Thompson, for the period 1952-1976. It gives a full coverage of every major industrial development in Queensland during this period, including the campaign of the Queensland branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union for autonomy from the English union, finally achieved in 1968, and its subsequent amalgamation with the Boilermakers' and Blacksmiths' Society, the Sheetmetal Workers' union and the Shipwrights' Union. The collection also includes the minute books of Townsville branch meetings from 1894 and old minutes books from the Mackay, Ayr, Innisfail and Rockhampton branches.
