Sylvia Maud Card Archive

Sylvia Maud Card was born in Yarram, Victoria in November 1905 to Henry and Maud Card.
She became a teacher, and later headmistress of St Anne’s Church of England Grammar School in country Victoria.
After undertaking Theological Studies, Sylvia’s dream was to become a missionary.  This led her to North Queensland, initially teaching at St Mary’s School in Herberton in 1952.  In 1954 she took up a position at the Mitchell River Aboriginal Mission School (Kowanyama) where she was head teacher and known as Sister Maud.  When the Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs took over the running of Mitchell River in 1967, Sylvia stayed on as Liaison Officer until her retirement in 1971.
Sylvia moved to Cairns upon her retirement where she was actively involved in the Cairns Photography Club and her church interests.
She passed away in October 1989.

This valuable collection of papers was donated to James Cook University in 1994 by Sylvia’s sister, Dorothy Perrett.
