Details The Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (Inc) was formed in 1981 by concerned members of the Far North Queensland community seeking better protection for Far North Queensland's natural treasures. Since then, CAFNEC has been a focal point for environmental action and education in this region. CAFNEC has hundreds of individual members and supporters and serves as the peak body for more than twenty other community-based environment groups in Far North Queensland. CAFNEC also has an important role within the broader environment movement and networks on issues of common concern with groups elsewhere in Queensland and Australia and around the world. CAFNEC's geographical region of interest includes the region from Cardwell in the south, north to the Torres Strait and west to the Gulf of Carpentaria. This area includes three World Heritage Areas: the Wet Tropics (rainforests), the Great Barrier Reef and the Riversleigh fossil sites. |
