Local conservationist, Rosemary Hill inspects damage caused to the Daintree rainforest by clearing for the controversial Bloomfield Road undertaken by the Douglas Shire Council on behalf of the Queensland Government. The road was officially opened in October 1984 with more than 50 vehicles reported to be bogged after heavy rain fell in the prior 24 hours. The Daintree Road issue escalated the campaign onto the national and international arena leading eventually to listing of the area in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest in 1988.

ALP Senator Richardson has just announced the boundaries of the proposed World Heritage Listing of Far Northern Rainforests. On his visit to the logging town of Ravenshoe to explain the likely effects of the listing, Richardson was attacked by a group of timber workers who feared the loss of their jobs.

Downey Creek is about 30 kilometres south-west of Innisfail. Downey Creek was singled out by consrvationists as the last substantial remaining area of virgin rainforest on basalt soil. CSIRO scientists undertook a study of Downey Ck for the Department of Defence and recommended the area "be permanently excluded from logging" and become a reserve in the Man and Biosphere program of the United Nations (Cairns Post 14/4/1983)

Save the Windsor Rainforest banner at Mt Windsor picket meeting. Nearly 100 protesters attended a symbolic ceremony proclaiming a National Park covering the entire greater Daintree area. Mike Graham of the Rainforest Action Group read the proclamation which said in part “we ask the citizens of Australia to urge their elected representatives to preserve this area”. To the jubilation of onlookers and protesters, Mike Graham declared the road works closed and proceeded to move along the road planting over 100 native rainforest trees. Heavily laden timber trucks leave Mt Windsor Tableland area west of Innisfail. Downey Creek is a rainforest area which was being logged around the same period as Mt Windsor and the Daintree. Both The Mt Windsor area and Downey Creek, along with a portion of the Daintree rain forest would be eventually be included in the world Heritage boundaries and listed in the wet Tropics World Heritage area in 1988. This eventuated after nearly a decade of protests from Local, state, Federal and eventually International pressure on the Queensland Government. Figure 4 in Mary Burg’s essay D030001
